Communion

Communion or Holy Eucharist is the primary liturgical worship of the Episcopal Church. It is usually celebrated at all Sunday services, and at baptisms, weddings and funerals. The term “Eucharist” means “thanksgiving.”

Communion The community gathers to hear the Word of God in Scripture and to receive the presence of Christ, in the form of consecrated bread and wine. A priest or bishop officiates, often assisted by other clergy and lay persons.

All persons seeking a closer walk with Christ are welcome to receive Holy Communion. At communion time, please come forward following the directions of the ushers. We will offer the common cup for those who would like to receive from the common cup. We also offer grape juice for those who, for any reason, cannot receive the blood of Christ in the form of wine. When you come to the altar, you may take a small cup to be filled by the server with wine. Or you may take a small cup that has already been filled with consecrated grape juice. Or you may receive from the common cup.

To receive the bread, Episcopalians place their open right hand over their left palm in a “cross”. The priest then places the bread in the right palm. You may swallow the bread right away, or wait and dip your bread in the cup of wine instead.

Gluten-free concerns?

Gluten-free wafers are available at every communion. The priest places a small, round container with gluten-free wafers on the communion plate.  As the priest approaches, simply say "gluten-free." Take a wafer from the container, since the priest has already touched wheat wafers, and does not want to contaminate yours.

The common cup

If you drink from the cup, gently guide it with your hands to your lips.  If you choose not to take wine, indicate this to the server by crossing your hands over your heart.

Mobility concerns?

If mobility issues prevent you from coming to the communion rail, please let the usher know. The priest and server will come to your seat to give you communion.
